      Horizon 2019 - July 10th 2019

      Description

When you install OpenNMS on Ubuntu from the official stable repository, the init script can't start OpenNMS and shows the following error message:

      root@kubernetes:~# systemctl start opennms
Job for opennms.service failed because the control process exited with error code.
See "systemctl status opennms.service" and "journalctl -xe" for details.

The error message in journal is the following:

Jul 12 07:55:11 kubernetes systemd[1]: Starting LSB: OpenNMS - Open Source Network Management System...
Jul 12 07:55:11 kubernetes opennms[65088]: $JAVA_HOME is not set. Set it in /etc/default/opennms or run `/usr/share/opennms/bin/runjava -s` to autoconfigure.
      Jul 12 07:55:11 kubernetes systemd[1]: opennms.service: Control process exited, code=exited status=1
      Jul 12 07:55:11 kubernetes systemd[1]: opennms.service: Failed with result 'exit-code'.
Jul 12 07:55:11 kubernetes systemd[1]: Failed to start LSB: OpenNMS - Open Source Network Management System.

Starting OpenNMS from ${OPENNMS_HOME}/bin/opennms start works without any issues.

      root@kubernetes:/usr/share/opennms/bin# ./opennms start
Starting OpenNMS: (not waiting for startup) ok
      root@kubernetes:/usr/share/opennms/bin

Hint: Please be not confused, the name of the host from my test environment is "kubernetes" and I did a vanilla installation from the repo on the host directly.
