Yes. I've added something in the documentation to say that you should use metadata ONLY with expression-based thresholds and not basic ones.

The majority of the use cases I have in mind don't involve expressions, which is the only use case on which meta-data works with thresholds (based on the comments on that other Jira issue), so I'd need time to think on a practical use case with that in mind.

Speaking of which, and the reason for my last comment, I hope the documentation explicitly says that you should never attempt to use the meta-data feature on basic thresholds.

The reason for this is because that will break the WebUI for thresholds (making it unusable), until the user access the machine via SSH and manually fix the file (and not necessarily users with ROLE_ADMIN are entitled to have permissions to SSH the machine). Finally, if this is done and the file is not fixed, OpenNMS wouldn't restart, which is why I believe we should provide a fix for the other issue.
